Saudi Arabia to Launch Electric Air Taxis by 2026

Saudi Arabia's national airline, Saudia, is set to revolutionize travel with the introduction of up to 100 electric air taxis from German company Lilium, with the first jets arriving by 2026.

Saudia has placed an order for 50 electric aircraft with an option for 50 more, marking a significant step in the Kingdom's push for cutting-edge travel options to popular tourist destinations. The agreement, signed in Gauting near Munich, solidifies a preliminary understanding from late 2022 for these advanced electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

These innovative Lilium jets will be utilized across various locations in the Kingdom. In Jeddah, they will transport passengers between the city and hotels in Mecca, catering to religious tourists. Additionally, they will be employed in the capital and the Red Sea region, facilitating travel to and from airports and new tourist projects. Saudia may consider purchasing more jets based on Lilium's support and maintenance performance.

The Lilium jet, with a price tag of $7 million each, resembles a small plane more than a helicopter, featuring two sets of wings and electric turbines. Currently undergoing full-scale testing, Lilium plans to deliver the first jets to Saudia by 2026, with piloted test flights expected to begin early next year.

This order from Saudia represents the largest firm order of eVTOL aircraft by any airline, highlighting the growing interest and investment in electric aviation.
